We love our local communities! Our mission is to keep prices down so you can enjoy the garden of your dreams without breaking the bank! We are a family-run business that puts our customers first every single day! We are constantly striving to improve our stores and bring you fresh stock at unbeatable prices!

Is your garden fence looking a bit tired? Are you planning a weekend of DIY? Painting your fence is one of the quickest ways to transform your outdoor space! But the UK weather can be a nightmare for timber! If you don't get it right, your hard work could be peeling off by next winter! We see these common mistakes all the time! Here is our guide to avoiding them and choosing the right finish!

1. Ignoring the "British Summer" Weather Window

The biggest mistake we see is people rushing out to paint as soon as they see a tiny bit of sun! In the UK, the weather changes in minutes! You need a clear window of at least 24 to 48 hours without rain! If it rains on fresh paint, it will wash right off or leave nasty streaks!

Temperature is also vital! Never paint your fence if it is below 10°C! The paint won't bond properly to the wood! It will just sit on the surface and peel away within months! Also, avoid painting in direct, scorching heat! If the sun is too hot, the paint dries too fast! This prevents it from soaking into the wood grain for a deep, protective finish!

We recommend checking the forecast three times before you open that tin of Ronseal! Our stores in Grimsby, Louth, Scunthorpe, and Beverley are always stocked up and ready for when that perfect weather window hits!

2. Skipping the Scrub: Poor Surface Prep

You wouldn't paint your car without washing it first, would you? Your fence is the same! Many DIYers make the mistake of painting straight over old dirt, algae, and cobwebs! This is a recipe for disaster! The paint will stick to the dirt, not the wood!

Use a stiff garden brush to get rid of all the loose bits! If you have green algae, you need a proper cleaner! We stock a massive range of garden chemicals and cleaners that are much cheaper than the big DIY warehouses! A quick scrub now saves you a massive headache later!

3. Painting Damp Wood

This is the ultimate UK DIY sin! We get a lot of rain, and wood is like a sponge! Even if the sun is out, the inside of your fence panels might still be soaking wet! If you trap that moisture under a fresh coat of paint, it has nowhere to go!

When the sun hits the fence, the moisture tries to escape and creates bubbles in your paint! Eventually, these bubbles pop and the paint flakes off! You must let your fence dry out completely! We suggest waiting at least two full dry days after heavy rain before you start painting!

4. Using the Wrong Tools for the Job

Don't try to paint a 50-foot fence with a tiny indoor brush! You will be there for weeks and the finish will be patchy! We have the best range of hand tools and specialized fence brushes in the area! Our tools are professional grade but at Trotters Traders prices!

Consider a sprayer if you have a lot of ground to cover! Brands like Ronseal and Cuprinol make fantastic spray-able paints that save you hours of work! We are much cheaper than B&Q for all your painting accessories, from trays to rollers and high-quality brushes!

5. Overloading the Brush or Sprayer

More is not always better! A common mistake is putting on a thick, heavy coat thinking it will save time! This leads to drips and runs that look terrible once dry! Thick coats also tend to "skin" over the top while staying wet underneath!

The secret to a long-lasting finish is two thin coats! This allows the first coat to soak deep into the timber for protection! The second coat provides the uniform colour and the weather-resistant seal! Trust us, it’s worth the extra effort!

6. Ignoring Your Neighbours (And the Law!)

Did you know you can't just paint your side of the neighbour's fence without permission? It’s a common cause of local disputes! If the fence belongs to your neighbour, even if it faces your garden, you need to ask first!

Also, be careful with sprayers! On a windy day, that "Slate Grey" paint can blow right over the fence onto your neighbour’s prize-winning roses or their brand-new car! Always check the wind direction and use a piece of cardboard to shield the edges! We want all our customers in Grimsby, Louth, Scunthorpe, and Beverley to stay on good terms with their neighbours!

7. The "One Coat" Trap

Many brands claim "One Coat" coverage! While products like Ronseal One Coat are amazing for a quick refresh, bare wood or a total colour change usually needs more! If you are going from a light brown to a dark grey, one coat will often look patchy!

Don't be afraid to go back for a second tin! At Trotters Traders, we price check daily to make sure we match or beat the big retailers like Home Bargains and B&M! You can afford that second coat when you shop with us!
